One of the boys, an awkward gangly youth, tripped over my chair on the way to his own chair next to me, and that is how I met my eventual husband. At that time Berkley was rigidly tracked, so a lot of my friends were no longer in my classes as I was in the top track in English and I pushed myself from the middle track in math to the top track by taking geometry and trig together in tenth grade. This is not how students should feel about any teacher.įrom there I went to Berkley High School. Even though I aced the assignment, it taught me that many teachers had capricious assignments that were designed to deliberately trick all but the most careful.
The lows included an exercise in which I was handed a sheet of instructions, the last of which was to sit and do nothing. The high points of my middle school career included a science project on diamonds and learning how a car transmission works. While at Norup Middle school I excelled in science, English, and social studies, improved in math, and sang in the choir.
This bullying, beating, and tormenting resulted in my having a firm conviction that these behaviors are intolerable and that cultural sensitivity to people of all backgrounds is vital, not just in teaching but in life as well. My first few years were marred by beatings by gangs of boys and girls supported by specific teachers and administrators, ceasing only after an ACLU lawsuit was initiated. I began my education in the Berkley school system at Tyndale elementary school in northern Oak Park, Michigan.
